“When you did the calculation, what number of sources Russia is investing in preserving this periphery in its sphere of affect, and the way a lot Russia would achieve from financial returns, commerce, safety, funding and lack of hassle with its main markets in Europe, I feel the equation would say let these nations [in the periphery] go,” says Alexander Gabuev, a senior fellow on the Moscow Carnegie Centre.
